Dayenu

Some of our greatest strengths can also be our biggest challenges. For me, I’ve always been deeply motivated by the fear of “running out” or “not having enough”. In many ways, it’s been a huge gift in my life.

If you’ve ever come to my house for dinner, you know one thing for sure: you will never leave hungry. I always make more than enough because I never want to run short. That same drive follows me in nearly every part of my life. It has served me well in business, and it pushes me to try and make sure that the people around me never feel like they’re lacking. This drive has been an amazing fuel, but it also comes with its fair share of stress and challenges.

A few months ago, I was introduced to the concept of Dayenu a Hebrew word that means “It would have been enough”.   The word comes from a song sung during the Passover Seder, expressing gratitude for each step of the Jewish people’s journey out of Egypt. But the deeper meaning of Dayenu goes beyond gratitude, it’s about recognizing and appreciating the abundance we have been given.

Enough means “as much as is necessary”. Dayenu means realizing that we are often given so much more than we need. It would have been enough for me to have food to nourish my body today. But Dayenu is realizing not only do I have enough to nourish my body, but I have a refrigerator of choices I can cook today.  It would have been enough for me to have food to eat but I have been given more.

At its heart, Dayenu is about recognizing that we are often given more than we need.   It’s about recognizing and appreciating the abundance we have received and connecting it to the giver.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.” -Melody Beattie

As humans we often tend to focus on what we lack rather than what they have, which can lead to anxiety and a sense of not having enough. Sometimes we just need to pause, look around, and say: I have been given more than I need... And I’m grateful.

Dayenu!
