Eagles Versus Hippos

We all see the world and situations through our own unique lens, shaped by our experiences, emotions, and beliefs. We often view our own behavior more favorably, giving ourselves the benefit of the doubt. We excuse our missteps, rationalizing them with good intentions—yet we judge others’ actions more harshly, filtering them through bias and assumption.

Think about it; when someone cuts you off on the highway, is your first instinct to assume they’re rushing to the hospital, or do you immediately brand them as selfish and reckless? Anger is usually based on intention and that’s always a matter of Perspective.

This week, I got it wrong. I misread an email, interpreting a tone and intention that weren’t actually there. I reacted, convinced I understood the situation. But surprise, surprise—my perspective was clouded by my own assumptions. I failed to offer grace. I didn’t take the high road.  Grace is offering love, especially when it isn’t deserved. It’s choosing to see the best in people even when you think you have every reason not to.

Carl Sandburg once said, “There is an eagle in me that wants to soar, and there is a hippopotamus in me that wants to wallow in the mud.” How true is that?

Some days, we rise above the noise, embodying wisdom, grace, and strength. Other days, we sink into the mud and fling poo at others, letting frustration consume us. Yes fun fact… Hippos actually fling poop with their tails. To mark their territory. 🦛💩 YIKES!

Every day, we have a choice: to rise or to wallow. To be the light or to get lost in negativity. To extend grace or to cling to judgment.

Let’s be more mindful of our perspective. Give each other grace and take the high road.
