Gravy Over Grudges

Headed to see your family this week? I learned a new hack to help leaders communicate better with their teams.  But I think it works even better with family especially around the holidays.  This hack helps to keep the peace and your sanity for those intense holiday dinners.

How it works:

You know how most people roll into family conversation like they’re at a 10—totally convinced they’re 100% right. Well, that’s exactly how Thanksgiving turns into Fight Club.

So be the Yoda of the group and, try this instead: share your opinions like you’re at a 6. You’ve got your great perspective, sure, but maybe—just maybe—you don’t have all the answers. This leave room for more. It’s a cleaver little tweak that can totally change the conversation.

What to do:

  • Cancel the “I Know Everything” Vibes: Say stuff like, “This is just my take, this is what I understand, or as I have read or heard.” It’s more approachable, and it makes people want to listen and engage.

  • Ask, Don’t Preach“What do you think about it?” Boom—conversation, not confrontation.

  • Leave the Ego at the Door: Thanksgiving isn’t about winning a debate it’s about connecting. Besides the turkey is always the real winner.

  • Don’t Fight, Study: If the conversation starts to head south, don’t fight get curious and use magical phrase: “Tell me more about that.”

Are you a 6 or a 10? Really this is a great lesson for every area of your life. It might even help your family game nights not become fight nights. 😂 Try it!

The 6-10 Hack…. Keep the peace, start better conversations, and leave more time for pie.

Notes that Resonated

  • The lazy lose to the average.

  • The average lose to the focused.

  • The focused lose to the obsessed. (FS brainfood)

  • Yelling at traffic doesn’t make it move faster. Where are you wasting energy

  • While you're busy fighting what is, you're blind to what could be.

  • All the energy you put into arguing with reality comes at the expense of improving your situation. The mountain doesn't care how much you yell at it, but you'll find a path around it if you stop and look.

  • Very soon you will smile and say God this is more than I prayed for

  • Motivation is overrated what you really need is momentum

  • 15% better is good, but 100% different is better

  • A 50% loss demands a 100% gain to break even

  • Excellence isn't about occasional brilliance - it's about consistent execution

  • Every ordinary moment is an opportunity to make your future easier or harder
