Are You Connected?

I am in the middle of moving offices, and I came across this photo. This is the first big managers’ retreat we had with our leadership team. It gives me such joy and comfort to know that even 10 years later we are more connected now than we were then.  What’s even more amazing is that God continued to put people in our paths throughout the years and this very tight group continued to grow.  It’s my family…

I’ve been reading the book "Shoe dog", which is the story of Phil Knight and how he grew Nike from a raggedy start-up in the early 70’s into the company we know today. It’s a great story about the fine line between success and failure and what it takes to make it big. He took a ton of risks along the way but the one thing that really stood out to me was the family-like bond and strong culture he created through and with his leadership team. There is nothing more important in creating a successful company and culture than building a talented, cohesive team filled with trust and connection.

This year has been tough for lots of people in the real estate industry. Layoffs, comp reductions, poor profitability and lack of production have been hurdlesthat lots of teams have had to overcome. Some teams have handled it better than others and some teams are still struggling to get through.

The best leaders understand their teams’ needs are most important and in this environment many of their team’s core needs are being challenged. This will, of course, quickly trigger their flight/ flight instinct. So, if you are worried about retention make sure you wrap your arms around your team and that you, the company, and their jobs are checking at least the first three boxes on the needs list below. The more boxes you can check, the higher you will be with your retention.

  1. Is my team making sufficient income to meet all their physiological needs?

  2. Do they feel safe and secure?

  3. Do they have and emotional connection to people around them, especially to you the leader?

  4. Do they feel like they are achieving, sufficiently challenged and have respect from others?

  5. Do they feel like they are realizing their potential and are living their purpose?

If the answer is “No” to any of these…. You have work to do.
