What People Remember

I got a text this week from someone who I consider a friend that really hurt my heart.  It wasn’t mean in spirit or even intentional, but it really cut me.  The feeling lingered for most of the day and was even there later in the week.  As I was processing my feelings and response to the text, I thought…. how many times have I unintentionally hurt someone from words that left a long-lasting mark?  And on the flip side how many times have I left a lingering positive mark?

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” - Maya Angelou

It’s a cliche phrase but it’s so unbelievably true. People have short memories in a lot of areas, but they almost always remember how you made them feel. The stronger the emotion the greater the impact and the longer it will linger.

I say this not to make you second guess everything you say or do.  I say it because as friends and leaders it is so important for us to be cognizant of how we make people feel.  Great leaders and great friends elevate how the people around them feel.  Whether it’s feeling like they are learning or feeling like they are special, how you make them feel is what they will always remember.

So do a quick gut check… In the last week, how have you made your team (or your friends, family, husband, processor, whatever) feel?  Fluffy or not people often stay or go based on how they feel.

Elevate how you make people feel.  It’s your legacy!
