Suffering

This letter is dedicated to our dear friend Everette and his wife Donna who unexpectedly lost their young son in an accident this weekend.

Yesterday marked the end of the Christian faith’s Holy Week.  A sacred week that started almost 2000 years ago with cheers and waiving of palms welcoming Jesus to Jerusalem and gave way to his ultimate betrayal and crucifixion.  As I think about the Holy week’s series of events and where they lead, my mind wanders to the early departure of Everette’s son Kyle.  And I am reminded that God does not allow anything to happen in our lives that he will not use for his glory.

The very thing that prompted Judas to move against Jesus was the very thing that set salvation in motion.  What was fraught with sadness and evil, became God’s glory.  He often uses the unimaginable for his purpose.  I lift up Everette and his family in this very difficult time.

Three things to guide us this next week:

  1. God will not allow anything in our lives, no matter how difficult, that he won’t ultimately use for his glory.

  2. Don’t behave as if you (or those around you) are destined to live forever - Marcus Aurelius

  3. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me will have life even if they die. And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. (John 11:25,26)

Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it - Helen Keller
