Do What You Can When You Can

“Do what I can when I can” is the new motto of a friend of mine who is working to defeat cancer. When he said those words, they really resonated with me. For him they were about taking advantage of his strength when he could. If he felt good enough to go to the gym, then he would. If he didn’t then he would do what he could. But when you think about those words, they have so much wisdom.

We often take our health, our family, our work, heck even our residency here in the states for granted. We just assume everything will be there tomorrow. But the fact of the matter is that it may not, so do what you can when you can. Take advantage of what you have been given while you have it available to you. Don’t squander it. Your plans, your list, and your intentions mean nothing. It’s not about what you hoped to do, or wanted to do, it’s what you do that matters.

So, do what you can when you can. What are the things you haven’t said, or the things you haven’t done.  Who are the people you haven’t loved or appreciated enough? What are the things that really matter to you? Make a list of those things and put effort into doing what you can when you can.

“It’s not enough to be busy; so are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about?” —Henry David Thoreau.

Notes that Resonated

  • Don’t wait on perfection

  • Avoid procrastination and accomplish your goals with one question “What’s the very next step?”

  • You can choose to pay attention to what you have lost or what you still have

  • God uses even the detours in our lives for his glory. His grace is greater than your detour

  • Pressure is a privilege. It means things are expected of you.

  • A year from now you will wish you started today

  • What are your top 3 priorities at the moment?

  • “Being present is just learning to be nostalgic about the moment you’re still in.” - All it takes is a goal

  • Everything you love comes with something you don’t

  • Stop saying you are bad at something, start saying you are new at it
